The Data Behind the Disclosures: Emerging Trends in TNFD and Nature Reporting

We reviewed more than 50 corporate sustainability reports to assess which datasets are most commonly used for nature risk assessment. These are the trends we uncovered:

  • ENCORE is the primary entry point:
ENCORE is the most commonly used tool among assessed companies, aligning with the “Evaluate” phase of the TNFD framework.

  • Actionable metrics are underutilized:
Only 7% of companies make use of the STAR metric, an actionable tool designed to translate species data into location-specific conservation priorities.

  • Ecosystem integrity is overlooked:
Of the four TNFD-recommended sensitive area categories for the “Locate” phase, ecosystem integrity is the least reported. Underreporting this category represents a major blind spot in corporate nature risk assessments.

  • Assessment approaches are fragmented:
Just 22% of companies assess all four TNFD sensitive location categories, pointing to a fragmented and potentially insufficient understanding of their nature-related risk landscape.

  • Tools for full alignment are readily available: Achieving full alignment with TNFD guidance requires a multi-dimensional, spatially explicit approach. This is increasingly feasible through integrated platforms that support comprehensive assessments across all nature risk categories.
